I had the same problem.
The above worked me also to run the installation of compiz and compiz-
gnome again.

My system is Ubuntu Hardy (AMD64) with ATI Radeon XPress 1250.
After update I run into same problem, but few minutes ago I fixed it.
During the package actualization two packages were uninstalled: compiz
and compiz-gnome. I installed them manually and compiz started working
OK.
