I prefer this solution as compared to bug #231098, as it covers more
architectures. Could motu-sru please comment whether this would be an
appropriate solution to apply for Hardy, and if so, please approve the
Hardy task?

I agree. OpenJDK isn't ready from prime time - at least on the two
mission critical applications and applets I've tried (which are
unfortunately proprietary or I would include links and test procedures).
Unfortunately, even Sun's JRE isn't a great solution on AMD64 - as there
is no applet
