This definitely seems to be KNetworkManager-related. I have just switched to Ubuntu without the K (i.e. installed ubuntu-desktop and removed the kubuntu bits) and it works fine now. Since there is apparantly now no one who can reproduce this bug, you might as well close it until someone else
