So I grepped $HOME/.local for x-extension-pdf and found a
$HOME/.local/share/mime/application/x-extension-pdf.xml, which I've
deleted. After doing update-mime-database .local/share/mime/, gvfs-
info reports the right info and the thumbs generate and display
correctly in nautilus.

Thanks for your report, it looks like something broken in your
installation, may you check if you can reproduce the same with another
new user created on your system? Also what's the content of the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] key on gconf? is that enabled?

I added a new user, and it works in the new user's account.

Just double checked and gvfs-info plai-2007-04-26.pdf |grep content
yields applicaiton/pdf under the new test account.
