For some reason upstream doesn't install with SUID bit enabled, so the
old fix does not work here, instead we need to patch the build system
into enabling suid.

I executed the following command to fix it :
$ sudo chmod 4755 /usr/bin/kopete_thinklight_fixpermissions
The permissions are now : -rwsr-xr-x
How can we submit this change upstream ?
