didn't work for me, also 8.04, Automatically load subtitle files is
checked, app quit and restarted and it is still checked, but no subtitle
file is loaded. --debug doesn't add anything pertinent.

I believe it is possible to import subtitles. I do not think that they
are automatically enabled. Try that, and post your results.

I would use VLC Media player to run this media file. Download it from
Add/Remove... and run the video file. I believe importing subtitles can
be found under the Video category.

I had the same problem when upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 and i solved it
by making the subtitles to load when the movie does. My totem is in
spanish but i think the menus might be something like this:
Edit - Preferences, and then check something like load subtitle file
when the movie starts
