This morning I reinstalled Kubuntu 8.04 to test restarting X against the
loss of sound. After the first post-installation boot, sound was, as
expected, normal. Ctrl-Alt-Bksp and logging back in, sound was retained.
I then proceeded to install the available updates and to manually
install and configure the proprietary nVidia driver. Again, I used Ctrl-
Alt-Bksp to exit X and log back in. Again, sound was retained.

I then did a warm re-boot, followed by others and, so far, sound has
been retained.

The problem seems rectified, hopefully through the updates. If I
encounter it again I will re-post under a more informative title, unless
advised otherwise, in the interim.
