Could you also please attach the output of:
lspci -vvv so we know what kind of hardware you have (please have the
UMTS modem that is causing problems plugged in)

Going by the information provided it appears as this might be a problem with
the hardware drivers or the hardware itself...
Does the card work okay in windows?
Have you tried clicking the button Use http method in the advanced
settings?
For the time being I am removing the assignment to the
1) no proxy in use
2) Advanced TAB:
Server: messenger.hotmail.com
Port: 1863
Use HTTP method: unticked
Proxy Options: No Proxy
Maybe this helps? Got this out of the messages log (you can see the PPP
connection enabling)

Another interesting development.
I use a different UMTS card now. MSN seems to connect, I can see the
status of my buddies, though when I try and send a message I get
this::

All other applications (like Firefox) work correctly (though slow ;) on
GPRS/UMTS.
Pointer could be that Firefox starts up in Offline mode aswell, although
I'm fully connected on UMTS!
Telnetting to the MSN port works fine by the way.

2) In pidgin when you look at an MSN account there is an advanced tab... Could
you please let me know what is clicked (ex: is use http clicked) and could you
