I've been having the same problem with the authentication timing out,
but it only affects WEP networks as far as i can tell. This Ubuntu
intrepid ibex beta kernel 2.6.27-6-generic with 3945ABG wifi. I've just
updated to 2.6.27-7-generic and will test later.

Can you actually test the even newer 2.6.27 kernel which is available in
the lastest Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha5 release. You should be able to
test with a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Thanks.

I was away for some time so i could not respond
I have the same problem now with newest kernel in ubuntu (8.04) i can't connect
after changing hardware address. My AP don't have any hardware address
restrictions.

upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would

Can you try installing the linux-backports-modules package as I believe
it has an updated version of the iwl3945 driver. If the issue still
exists, care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for
the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a
almost the same here, but on archlinux.
however, I never can connect (doesn't deppend on a hardware change) and the
router works as 11b
