I am on hardy and installed php5-recode to solve the problem.

Installing php5-recode did not immediately work for me. However, I
noticed that when I fired up the php cli, it showed a warning message
about another module not loading correctly. When I fixed this, then the
rkhunter problem went away. I then tested by removing php5-recode and
the problem came
Same issue here on hardy:
rkhunter --cronjob --propupd
[: 12255: -1: unexpected operator
[: 12255: 1: unexpected operator
php4 not installed, but php5 is.

I don't have php4-cli installed, but running php gave these warnings:
PHP Warning: Module 'gd' already loaded in Unknown on line 0
PHP Warning: Module 'ldap' already loaded in Unknown on line 0
After removing the extra extension=ldap.so and gd.so lines from
/etc/php5/cli/php.conf the errors
I've been having the same problem. Just tonight I found what it is. I
have php4-cli installed, and executing /usr/bin/php caused some
warnings:
PHP Warning: mime_magic: type search/400 \\input text/x-tex
invalid in Unknown on line 0
PHP Warning: mime_magic: type search/400
I can confirm this here:
