I used Windows and in Notepad, I often opened non-text files. Example, I would open executables and be able to find some meaningful data. Sometimes, I found passwords for trojans. I discovered what email address the keylogger send to, etc. I even saw some libraries that the program called. Maybe

Gedit is a text editor, but I see no reason to prevent it from opening a binary file even if its garbled and the user cant get anything meaningful from it. At least it could have a This is an non-text file, so there is no reason for you to open it. Click Open anyways if you want open it anyways.

Thanks for reporting this issue. This is not really a bug. Gedit is an editor for text files. You try to open a binary file. There is no meaningful representation of such files in a texteditor. I am not sure why you try to do this. Maybe you want to try a hexeditor like hexedit instead. Thanks
