This just happened to me. We were in a dead drawn king and pawns (no pieces on either side) endgame. The game was going to end in threefold repetition soon. We were probably on move 40-50 somewhere. I haven't had any problems with GNU Chess ending unexpectedly. I'm in Ubuntu 8.04, I think it is.
