this sounds like my issue to a tee. Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.
nothing in /var/crash, general protection fault messages. dbus
segfaults
sudo invoke-rc.d dbus restart
* Stopping Hardware abstraction layer hald
...done.
* Stopping DHCP D-Bus daemon dhcdbd
...done.
* Stopping Avahi
I have this problem on an up-to-date 8.04 system. I am very willing to
help debug. Please advise.

I have the same versions installed and can confirm this behaviour.
Unfortunately there is nothing in /var/crash.

Do you have any dbus related files in /var/crash? If so could
you please run
apport-cli -c /var/crash/filename
which will submit a bug report that will provide us with more
information.

other information can I retrieve? (as an FYI, I'm traveling today and
