According to your Xorg.0.log (II) intel(0): direct rendering: Enabled direct rendering is enabled. Could you please test it with Ubuntu Hardy Live CD and attach your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Maybe it is only a configuration issue. And please add each configuration/log file separate in the

Please recheck with the Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD. If compiz works than it is a KDE problem and should be reported against the KDE4 settings manager or whatever component is used. Maybe your xorg.conf needs to be regenerated if you have made a upgrade. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
