This seems to be a libsane problem.
On debbugs #474706 David Headland wrote on July 23rd 2008:
"I've managed to grab a few minutes to test libsane 1.0.19-15 with my
ScanJet 5300c this evening, and can report that scanning now works fine
for me"
Ubuntu Intrepid as of today still has "libsane-1.0.
This seems to be some issue with the avision backend. My Avision AV122
no longer works in Intrepid where it did used to work in Hardy. My HP
multifunction works fine.
Interestingly I created a fresh Hardy install under VMWare to see if it
worked there but alas that didn't work either. Below is the
