greypoet, if the local hostname doesn't match what is in the hosts file
it will come up as unable to resolve... I am glad your issue is fixed.

Somehow, got some updates through terminal that fixed the problem. I am
not on a local network, having only one computer so network config (my
interpretation) doesn't fit.

actually D) none of the above, I haven't had a chance to review the
information yet to determine what else is needed yet. Most of us
triagers work on a volunteer basis. I should have a chance to review
the issue later
In network manager can you click on Manual Configuration - Hosts and
find your hostname greypoet-desktop in the list... Does it say
127.0.1.1 beside it as the IP address?

Thank you for reporting this issue! I was wondering if you could answer
a few questions for me...
1) What happens if you try and open a terminal window and type sudo apt-get
upgrade. If there is an error message could you post what it says? I guess
that would be a good first step in trying
