For anyone who has this problem you can do the following commands to
change your bit rate from 54Mb/s to 11Mb/s
tell it that you want a manual bitrate instead of auto:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate fixed

I´m using an Asus wl-176g (usb) and I have the same problem under Kubuntu 8.04
(Kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic, fresh install + updates). As soon as start
downloading a file or a webpage my system gets really slow.

Somehow it suddenly works now, the only thing I did was to change the
rate of the interface manually to 11Mb/s (54MB/s didn´t make it any
better, see also bug#190515), because the speed of my wlan-connection
was very slow, max rate was about 20kb/s, now I´m getting up to 700kb/s
again!
