This no longer happens on Karmic. I did the following:
(1) Boot Windows
(2) Mute my sound
(3) Shut down Windows
(4) Booting Karmic
... and my sound is no longer permanently muted!
Changing status to "fix released".

I am just getting around to re-testing this on Karmic.
On this laptop, I haven't booted into Windows XP in a long while, so it
should be an interesting test. Here's the latest information on my
Karmic system:

I tested this with Jaunty today and confirmed it is still an issue.

completely and then boot into Ubuntu? Also, since the upcoming Intrepid
Ibex 8.10 release is actively being worked on, would you care to confirm
if this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming
