After discussing this with upstream HAL, they believe the bug is
actually in gnome-power-manager. A similar bug was fixed in KPowersave.

Here with the same problem of a very loud noise after resuming... I have
an HP Pavillion 9500 and I had this problem way before in 7.10. After I
upgraded to 8.04, the problem remained and I thought it was a hardware
