As far as I can see, the 386 -server does not have HIGHMEM support
either. Does it mean, anybody running a modern PC is unable to have more
RAM, if running in 32bit:
grep CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G config-2.6.26-2-server
# CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G is not set
or must reinstall everything with the -amd64
Christian - The Hardy server flavour only has CONFIG_X86_PAE set, which
is sufficient for that class of 32 bit servers. CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G has
some regressions for DMA support in 2.6.24, which is of interest on the
desktop where those DMA challenged devices are more likely to be in use.

Thanks. I have done the re-installation to amd64, although the installer
(alternate and desktop) are heavily buggy. Missing _mdadm_ AND _lvm2_.
So for me, I have a lv_home and stuff, which I did not want to lose...
I had 5 hours of doing hard installation (Thanks for the good old Gentoo
times).
Hardy i386 -generic and -386 flavours do not have HIGHMEM support
enabled since it also requires PAE, a feature of the CPU that is not
implemented on many 586 class processors (some VIA cpus for example).
Intrepid has the same issue. The only way to gain HIGHMEM support is to
either run the i386
I have installed linux-source-2.6.26. Unpacked it and copied over the
config file, doing make oldconfig, then make menuconfig.

portion of users) and assigned to ubuntu-kernel-team.
I will also nominate for Hardy since it is a LTS release.
Thank you for taking the time reporting this and follow through, hopefully they
can start on this right away.
Before I start printing all required information, one sidenote: The
server kernel lost this feature, too, at the moment ;-)

I can confirm this, only possible way to see all 4GB as to use the
server kernel. If you require the same logs, I can provide them.
