I thought this bug was long since closed.
After deleting the gconf directory in my home dir, gnumeric is working
again correctly. Don't know what caused this issue but it's working for
me now. Maybe gnumeric had troubles parsing gconf data from an earlier
version. Since nobody else seems to have
I am confirming this bug as it is still an issue for the reporter.
Perhaps the German translation team could assist with it. All menu items
work when using English.

I cannot confirm this bug on Intrepid, using a German locale. Maybe the
bug has been fixed in 1.8.3, which is what comes with Intrepid.
