this bug has begun for me as of 9/22/09
i get no errors when running from the terminal and user name and
password work in gmail web interface.
let me know what i can do to produce more info.

I'm having the same problem, I also tried to install checkgmail from
sources. It seems that checkgmail 1.13 shows, as info, a version of
1.12svn.

The author of checkgmail made some changes to correct this:
