I have the very same issue as this bug describes!
I marked Bug #340862 as a newer duplicate, which is also about the same
issue. If you don't want to reopen this one, I could add my comment
there. Or shall I really open a new one??

I confirm that this is still an issue in Karmic and in Lucid alpha 2.
Typically it occurs when multiple users edit the same file and therefore
make it -rw-rw-rw-. A usecase is a notes.txt that has to be editable
from a Live-CD and your normal account. ;-)
To reproduce:

I still can't reproduce this myself. The only situation where I can get
this is if I edit a text file (which I have write permissions for) in a
directory that I don't have write permissions in. In this scenario, you
can edit the already existing file, but don't have the permissions to
create new
Well, I created a file in my home directory (which is where I produce
this in my test) without issue, and I couldn't reproduce it in the new
file. It seems to just be with any already existing file from before
upgrading to 8.10.
I don't seem to get this issue at all when I run gedit as root.
