Is there a way to solve this issue without restarting firefox or skype?
I get the problem both in Gnome and in Kde...

What system are you guys running? ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, ect...
xubuntu and ubuntu use pulseaudio by default.

I got exactly the same problem with Ubuntu 8.10. One way to fix it is to
switch the whole system to pulseaudio.
