'ipod-convenience' is superseded; the libiphone+libgpod stack should be
used now.

Hi, please check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPhone
It appeared that you can turn on old compatibility mode via XML file on your
Ipod Touch/ Iphone.
Works for me with the latest firmware.

I am now using the dTunes package from Cydia for my music...it
unfortunately is limitted to Mp3 and AAC files...but better than nothing
;)
Hopefully the VLC port will be released soon, as half my collection is
in Ogg Vorbis :/

iPhone 2.0 compatability issues
At least its possible now to install XP in a VirtualBox and get iTunes working.
I installed VirtualBox 2.02, XP SP2 und iTunes 7.7, and I needed to get the
usbcore.ko Kernel module updated:

btw if you have installed cydia on your iphone one of the apps available is
called dtunes which will allow you to just copy the mp3s onto a folder and play
them. It's not as good as apples itunes but it plays your music so it's better
than nothing for now.

For a 3G, it isn't necessary to wipe out everything to recover. You can
keep the packages.
In /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control:
mv iTunes/ iTunes-backup
At the next sync, iTunes will consider the iPhone to be blank, and offer
to replace everything with the last backup. Cydia and
I'm not sure I follow.
For the sake of the argument, assume that I don't plan to use iTunes for
syncing at all. With the v2.0 firmware, I'll be blocked from using
Amarok and similar linux alternatives to sync, aye?
To boot, I have an old, non-3G phone.

iPhone 2.0 compatability issues
I had the same problem. After attempting to transfer some music from
Amarok 1.4.9.1 with ipod-convenience 0.9.0-ubuntu1 and libgpod
0.6.0-3ubuntu3 on Ubuntu 8.04.1 (x86-32) to my pwned iPhone 3G with
firmware 2.0.1 I can no longer sync with iTunes. iTunes tells me I need
to reformat my firmware.
The bad thing is that that page has been inactive lately :(

I believe Apple has changed the hash algorithm in the new 2.0
firmwares, which means that we won't be able to sync music with anything
else than itunes unless ones downgrade or someone figures out the new
algorithm. I've been using itunes over vmware myself.
