We've been fixing a number of problems related to this on and off for
the last couple of release cycles. I tried it today and installation to
a virtio device (as you describe) works fine, so I think we can call
this done. If I add ,boot=on to the -drive specification, it even
boots successfully
(My test was with jaunty, although I think 8.10 as released might stand
a chance; still, it should be basically perfect with 9.04.)
