Got the same error today when it told me that file us.archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick_universe_binary-i386_Packages
us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick_universe_binary-
i386_Packages is corrupt.
Removing the cache and redownloading package info resolved the problem.

This is a bug in apt-xapian-index which does not handle the error from
Apt and crashes. It seems that the cache file is defect, though.

I was afk when this crash occurred.
Fresh 2 day upgrade to Beta 9.10
Am experiencing other problems with this distro:
-unable to boot latest kernel 2.6.31-14-generic (unable to mount local
filesystem)
-current kernel reports same mounting error but does boot, 2.6.28-16-generic.
-avira antivirus
