Looks like HFS+ has a non-standard way of representing hard-links in the filesystem. The following is quoted from http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1150.html The Mac OS X implementation of hard links on HFS Plus volumes was done using the existing metadata fields of the catalog records.
