This was due to a MIME issue, which has now been resolved with help from
a GNOME developer, for which I am very grateful.

As many of the images I have tried to use as wallpapers are personal
images that I'd rather weren't published on the open Internet, I made
this image in GIMP. It is nothing more than one colour, with a
resolution of 1600x1200, and even this does not work.

The images I tried to add were JPEG format. No error message is given
when the dialog closes, and I have 15GB of space in my home directory.
Adding a PNG-format image as a wallpaper works, as I just discovered
before posting this comment. Is this a flaw, or a feature that has been
intentionally

Running the application from Terminal did not produce any output other
than the window appearing. Attached is a screenshot of the window's
Background tab. When clicking Add, an Add Wallpaper dialog appears,
but selecting an image and clicking Open only closes it.

only need to click on Add to add a new background to the app. Please
also run it from the command line and attach to the report any output of
