I am experiencing what seems to be the same (or at least a similar) bug, with
ubuntu going into low graphics mode after the update to 177. I'll attach the
tarball with the log dump that one can get from the low graphics mode menu in
Intrepid.
The card is a Nvidia 8400M G and I have not edited
...and on the first thing suggested, there's already a problem.

As it stands jockey failed to work 3 or 4

(from the Guidance parser) might have fixed the bug which prevented you
from using the NVIDIA driver.

Intrepid: Latest update destroys X server configuration (Nvidia GeForce
3.) This looks REALLY bad: Once more replaced the xorg.conf with Albert
Milone's (see above), but this time this has no effect whatsoever. VESA
mode, nothing else.

Intrepid: Latest update destroys X server configuration (Nvidia GeForce fx 5200
nvidia-glx-177, also problem with 173)
I did set the priority to high, and then set it back to new because the
part of this bug which caused Xorg to drop to VESA mode is probably
fixed (was related to problems with nvidia module itself and DKMS) ,
this bug would need to be tested with upcoming intrepid alpha 6.
