i have the same problem with Ubuntu 8.04, but i'm not using aufs. the
affected directory (/var/lib/apt) is on an ext3 partition
last lines of strace befure it hangs:
stat64(/var/lib/apt, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0
open(/var/lib/apt,
