The Dell Studio 15 with an Intel X3100 video chipse has the exact same problem.
But what's worse is that Dell is selling these computers with Ubuntu
preinstalled, and shipping them out with this error without even testing to see
that they boot up.
If anyone finds a fix for this, let me know as
I also can confirm this bug, and same results, on the same laptop. No
distro seems to yet have a solution (fedora rawhide, suse factory,
mandriva cooker, etc.), and compiling from upstream hasn't helped
either.
Has anyone tried using a GEM enabled kernel to tap into the latest
capabilities of
I've installed 8.10 RC and compiled the latest intel drivers (2.5.0),
and the LVDS problem is still not resolved. VGA output works great, but
the LVDS only works in vesa mode (fairly useless for me).
Let me know if I can contribute to solving this issue.

I am seeing this same behavior with a BRAND NEW Dell Studio 15 laptop
with Ubuntu preinstalled. Similar chipset (Intel GM965 aka X3100), same
xf86-video-intel driver. I tried installing ArchLinux on the laptop and
had the same problem when using the intel driver in xorg.conf. vesa
works fine

I have the exact same laptop and am experiencing the exact same problem.
I downloaded the latest beta release of Intrepid Beta, compiled the
2.4.2 intel drivers, all to no avail. When GDM starts, the screen turns
white and slows fades to grey with a grid pattern - completely unusable.

I wish I could help but I finally got tired of the situation and exchanged
the laptop with a VGN-FW139E/H which uses an ATI video chipset. It was
either that or use Vista until the drivers were fixed, and I wasn't willing
to submit myself to that type of torture. I am glad I exchanged it anyways
