Please re-test against current Karmic to see if the bug still occurs.

Is he vbios.bin file the one that you get by following the procedure at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing#Obtaining%20the%20video%20BIOS ?
(in that case the file will be named /tmp/rom.bin)

Btw, I would like it if you could subscribe directly to the upstream bug at

questions directly; if I'm in the role of a go-between you and upstream it
could delay how long

Perhaps should mention I'm using the older version A08 bios from Dell
which used to fix compatibility with the old i810 driver, in case this
is relevant.

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.
This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.
