In Intrepid-Beta, the applet appears in the right place and the
power/logout button is missing. Great!
Now: Can the default setting be changed to not show the logged in user
but resemble the logout/power button from Hardy?

Just upgraded one of my other machines from Hardy to Intrepid, and this
problem does affect upgrades as well.
