I have to add a thing.. for me, differently from that happens to exploder91,
for me there is no way to type into the quick search space..
as you can see by my screenshot it seems that quick search space where to
type don't exist..so there is no way to type nothing..

I have reinstalled 8.10 from a daily build from 10/19 and the issue is
resolved for me.

I can confirm this behaviour with Synaptic 0.62.1-ubuntu9.
It makes synaptic kinda useless.
