dmesg|grep snd provides no output on my computer. Sound works fine with 2.6.24-18. Oh well, I'll keep using that. By the way, a friend of mine has a computer with virtually the same hardware and the motherboard and graphics card are exactly the same, but he has sound on kernel 2.6.24-21 - strange.

That's the same procedure i followed. I think it is a problem involving only people who have added the ppa dell repository ( http://ppa.launchpad.net/dell-team/ubuntu ) to their software sources. Dell team publishes a modified version of kernel with pre-built modules useful for Dell systems.
