I am having the same issue with a Kubuntu 8.10

activating the medibuntu tree :
wget -q http://fr.packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo
apt-key add -
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O
I notice that you're both using the quick search box in Synaptic. There
is another search feature (the old one), which shoud still work fine.
For the Synaptic problem, could you please try running:
sudo update-apt-xapian-index
Then please restart Synaptic and try searching again.

I have run the command sudo update-apt-xapian-index and now quick search and
search in synaptic work properly! It solved this bug but the command line is
not user friendly...
