Umm. I found that i didn't need to click on the icon to change the
volume. When my mouse arrow is over the speaker icon my mouse wheel can
roll the volume up and down. Clicking on the icon is a good way to
quickly mute the volume, which i like.

Sorry. yes i do have this problem too, although i've not checked what
happens in windowed mode - just the same in full-screen though. I think
i'm using Hardy.

@Sebastien, I discovered that there are two issues, one that happens when I set
totem volume to maximum (1) and the other when I set the totem volume to a
value lower (2) than maximum:
