Paul was experiencing it in 8.10, but upgrading to a newer Transmission

I was suffering from what I think is the same problem with interpid
8.10, but followed the advice here to get the latest version of
Transmission:

First edit the config file with a command like this:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
This is possibly an old gtk bug that may have been fixed (I haven't seen
it for a while). Does the problem still exist for you with Ubuntu

Not really; I think it is not a problem of transmission but a problem of
the video driver.
