I'd like to report I'm also encountering this.
Just upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04 and all Kate session names except the
'Default Session' now appear as hexdecimal strings.

Also, any new saved sessions created in Kate use the name the user
gives. Only saved sessions from before upgrading are appearing as
hexdecimal.

Just added the Kate Applet like the original poster and some of the
names are now showing up correctly but there are still some in the list
appearing as hexdecimal. I have about 21 saved sessions in Kate at the
moment and 8 are still showing up as hexdecimal in the Kate Applet.

Saved Session
I tried the Plasmoid which seemed to read them correctly but it actually
failed to load any of them. I resorted to renaming all my files based on
the Name= field int he file... slow painful but it worked
(Substituting %20 for any whitespace chars).

More on the use of the Kate Plasmoid:
- Sessions where the names are now appearing don't open correctly (the
Kate window opens but none of the files from the saved session are
loaded)
- Sessions where the names are still hexdecimal open correctly (Kate
window opens and all the files are opened
