As you note, this has indeed been fixed. There's no record of it in the
changelog, but it appears to have been fixed by the Debian maintainer
(or upstream?) sometime between 5.8.8-1 and 5.9.1-2.

Incidentally, 5.8.8-1 was in Ubuntu 7.04, and 5.9.1-2 was in Ubuntu
7.10.

is it really that hard to install autogen on your machine, check if the
bug is still valid and close or confirm it for that version?
Please tell me why on the one hand you usually ask for explicit
reproduction details on most of the bug reports and why on the other,
you don't care
