ah, so this was a user question after all, I'm converting it as such.
btw, "compiz" is the program that is used when you enable "desktop
effects". Depending on your hardware, it is likely to be turned on by
default.

I fixed this problem. With the Acer TravelMate 8000, I had to use the
"acpi=off" or the "acpi=ht" option in order to boot.
I further researched the problem with the acpi, and found out that the
"nohz=off" option in the kernel module fixed my acpi problem.
Subsequently, after I found out this work
I'm using the default configuration for Ubuntu 8.10, I don't think
compiz is enabled and I don't believe metacity is either.
I'm used to looking this info up in xorg.conf, but there's very little
there, I guess that's the way it is with the new version.
