I fixed this problem. With the Acer TravelMate 8000, I had to use the "acpi=off" or the "acpi=ht" option in order to boot. I further researched the problem with the acpi, and found out that the "nohz=off" option in the kernel module fixed my acpi problem. Subsequently, after I found out this work

I'm using the default configuration for Ubuntu 8.10, I don't think compiz is enabled and I don't believe metacity is either. I'm used to looking this info up in xorg.conf, but there's very little there, I guess that's the way it is with the new version. Graphics Hardware: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
