I have installed gnome-power-manager (2.16.0-0ubuntu3), but there is
still no GUI to be seen when I change the brightness...

Michaël, it should be, unless ubuntu has patched it out or something daft like
that :-)
You won't get the indicator if you do not get events for brightness exposed
through DBUS, which depends very heavily on your laptop vendor. Things should
get more sane soon when ACPI depends on the input
If this is dapper:
gnome-power-manager (2.14.3-0ubuntu6) dapper; urgency=low
* Disable brightness hotkeys for now

I have a feeling that it may have been buggy. For me personally, g-p-m
seems to constantly play around
Hey! You nobbled my application! :-)
Matthew, can you comment on

Since edgy has a 2.16 version now, why isn't the dialog in? I thought it
was included in upstream g-p-m?

I tried the edgy gnome-power-manager, but it isn't there. My brightness
changes, but the dialog doesn't appear.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000...
