thanks Michael. I have un-installed driver using envyng -t and then
reinstall the default ATI driver from the Gnome UI. It is now working...
(don't ask me why). However the system is sometimes freezing out of the
blue... I will keep monitoring it and may report another bug when I
gather more
Was running an unsupported driver. I reinstalled supported driver and it
worked however the supported driver did not work out of the box. I
suppose the changes I made to menu.lst or xorg.conf file fixed the
problem that experienced in the first place.
** Changed in: ubuntu

LaToune, thanks for filing the bug report. Unfortunately unless you can
reproduce this bug with a driver supported by Ubuntu, ie in the official
ubuntu repositories, there's not much the devs can do to help.
Alternatively you could file an upstream. Thanks again.

X freeze when playing video
Thanks Michael.
1 - I initially installed the default driver proposed from the official
ubuntu repository but got my X to freeze at login time (I was keying in
user name and pwd and the screen was not getting to the desktop page).
2 - I then installed ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64.run
LaToune
As far as I'm aware EnvyNG will download the latest driver from the
ATI website.
Hi Michael,
Thanks for you advices. I have uninstalled the ATI driver then got to
reset the the ATI driver using menu System Administration
Hardware Drivers.
It installed correctly and I managed to reboot and login without any
problems :). Moreover I have managed to play videos fine this
When you say it freezes do you mean glxgears or the whole desktop? It
might be worth trying desktop effects just to see what happens.
Just to confirm are you still running 8.04 or have you upgraded to 8.10?
If you've checked these things and still have problems it would be best
to file a new bug
