ant now depends on default-jdk, and recommends ant-gcj. However, ant still depends on libxerces2-java, which depends on libxerces2-java-gcj, which pulls in gcj. I'd much rather have libxerces2-java depend on default-jdk too. libxerces2-java no longer universally recommends

I agree this is wrong. ant should not depend on a JDK since it can be used for much more than compilation. Packages that just build-depend on ant (and expect to get a JDK) should be fixed. I would even go further. Some software (including Eucalyptus) use ant at runtime, but not for compilation.

Whatever the decision it should be in sync in Debian/Ubuntu. Currently the ant package in Debian 'depends' on java-gcj-compat-dev where as the one in Ubuntu 'recommends' default-jdk. Let me know what you guys think. -- Please move default-jdk to 'Depends' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298400

why ant depends on default-jdk? I have an app that depends on velocity, and velocity depends on ant - so my end-users get the jdk installed on their machine... Or is the problem is that velocity depends on ant? -- Please move default-jdk to 'Depends' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298400 You
