I would like to note that this is not a bug for me. I simply forgot to
install the codecs that I used to have. ubuntu-restricted-extras had
the specific codecs I needed, and I no longer experience the error.

thanks fo the report, what's the output of: totem video.avi from the
command line? does it works fine if you play the file with: gst-launch
playbin uri=file:///path/to/video.avi ? looks more like a codecs issue
rather than a totem problem, thanks.
