To be complete : I booted an archlinux 2009.02 (USB key based version), and I saw the same problem : shutdown cannot be completed :/ And it is based on a 2.6.28.5 (or 6) linux kernel. So, there was a bug introduced during 2.6.27 development time which block shutdown on some computer ! --

Sadly I did see a fix come through (no idea which update) and when I tried to reboot to my amazement and joy it worked! Two updates later it was broken again. :( Shutdown never worked during this period and reboot is not working again. I did a dist-upgrade recently with the alpha repository,

I started receiving this problem after I changed graphic driver. I changed NVidia driver from the recommended driver to the older one trying to figure out the problem of the screen going blank on boot when the desktop should be up. This worked, now however, the system now won't shut down
