I tried to reproduce this in Jaunty and works fine for me (Totem
2.26.2), could you upgrade your system to latest version and try again,

I tried copy-paste the link into firefox adressbar, and totem(not the
totem plugin) started and actually played the stream without crashing.

fail in vlc and mplayer as well.
The verbose output from vlc shows that the connection is successful but it
doesn't seem to understand what type of stream it is. It seems confused.
