Found it.
Don't know if the upgrade had something to do with it but the problem
was the Multisession mode setting got changed to No multisession. My
bad for not checking sooner. Just didn't think of it because I always
leave it on the default Auto setting.

The problem is just the incorrect reporting of no space left. I have
replicated the problem with a number of DVD disks all with plenty of
space left and the result is always the same. And, as I said in the
initial report, it never happened before the most recent update. So it
must be this update
