The Live-CD is supposed to be used on a read-only media and thus the
upgrade may not fully function even if it is used on a write-able USB
storage. The /usr/sbin/update-initramfs is replaced with a simple shell
script outputting a warning instead of actually performing the desired
operation on a
Yes, thats the same I experienced. I created a Live-CD, based on 8.10.
In the main menu System - Administration there is the option to create
a USB startup disk which I did (8 GB). Then I performed the an update
with the update manager, it ended with the described error message.

I have Ubuntu running on an 8GB flash drive. Getting that to work was
frustrating. Installing on a 2GB drive was straightforward but when
following instructions the
8GB drive gave me a message invalid or damaged bootable partition.

well, I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to help you, but there is
still a question you have not answered, which is, what are you trying to
do? You say that you have Ubuntu booting off of a USB drive. Thats
working. What is leading to this error that you are getting? I assumed

later the the error in the dump was a direct result of a failure there.
I just presumed that update manager would be the only source of this
error but I can
Well, maybe I'm catching on a little. The contents of
/etc/initramfs-tools/update-initramfs.conf are:

# update_initramfs [ yes | all | no ]
#
# Default is yes
# If set to all update-initramfs will update all initramfs
# If set to no disables
